This Program starts the second Monday of August and ends the third Friday of May. The Program serves elementary and middle school students from 2:30 p. m. until 5:30 p. m., Monday through Friday. The Program targets students who have academic deficiencies, behavior, and personal problems which have caused poor academic performances. These students have fallen behind in their studies and are currently maintaining a grade point average of 74 or below. It is a likely possibility that these students will be retained at the end of the school year, or eventually dropout if their academic performance, work ethics and/or behaviors are not corrected. In addition to motivating participants, this Program promotes a secure relationship between participants, parents, tutors and teachers. The Program will provide participants one-on-one tutoring in subject(s) they are failing; and enrichment activities that teach participants a better way of learning. Peer assistance groups will be formed which will enable students to assist each other in learning. Additionally, the Program reinforces the importance of education, helps participants to improve their study and work ethics, and helps participants master their course objectives to improve their grade point average. These services will be offered to 70 elementary and middle school students. Teachers will determine the students who are in need of the services as well as complete a student assessment form explaining in detail the needs of the student. The Program will be coordinated and implemented by the program director and program coordinator with the assistance of mentors.
